When Fences Melt, Freedom Flies

Mixed Media by Sue T.

In this poignant mixed media piece, two hills dominate the landscape. The first is rocky and sculpted with deep greens and blues hidden within black, textured coarse pumice gel, giving it an earthy, raw feeling. In contrast, a second hill sits farther back—smooth and shadowed—creating a quiet sense of distance and depth. Beyond them, the sun rises, casting warm, golden light across the sky. A fence stretches across the scene—a symbol of division. Yet as sunlight touches it, something shifts. The fence begins to dissolve, transforming into birds that take flight into an open, boundless sky. It becomes a vision of freedom, hope, and the breaking of barriers. This imagery speaks powerfully to the divisions we face in our country and around the world today, where some advocate for higher fences—both physical and ideological—to separate and exclude. But this artwork offers another vision. It reflects the belief that God calls us to dismantle the walls that divide us—walls of hatred and injustice—and to heal the brokenness created by fear, racism, and corruption. It is a call to action: to tear down the fences and welcome all to the table of love, belonging, and acceptance.
