Lura and the Elephant
Watercolor Painting by Megan B.
Lura and the elephant depicts a young girl and an elephant in captivity gazing at each other. Their shared expression and connection demonstrates that even the most outwardly different beings have a lot in common. The contrast between the young girl who is free and the giant elephant enclosed in a small space behind layers of fences questions the ethics of holding such large animals in captivity. For me, “building bigger tables” is opening your mind to include people and beings of all kinds and making efforts to support the well being of everyone rather then focusing on selfish novelties (such as the opportunity to see a magnificent elephant).
