In Reality We Trust

Colored Pencil Drawing by Demettri R.

“In Reality We Trust” plays on the idea that sometimes what we see is not what's true. This piece takes the usual representation of an oxidized penny and distorts that representation. Where President Lincoln would usually be sitting, there is an eyeball headed person reaching out to you, distorting that reality. The use of the penny symbolizes greed, and the distortion of a reality that comes from having too much money. When greed takes over, the mind’s eye shrinks to the singular focus of monetary gain. A surplus of wealth leads to a disconnected life, separated from people, religion, and society.
